Stock News 2011: 50-year-old lola’s legacy that turned down SM

SM City DavaoImage via Wikipedia
Lola Abon was only one of the two pioneers in the durian candy making business in Davao but the company has developed a loyal customer following through the years.

Amidst the plethora of durian candies now flooding the market, one would always crave for the taste of the Lola Abon’s durian candy, its soft, pliant smoothness melting in one’s mouth, a sliver of the durian pulp almost discernible.

Now, Lola Abon is distributed in practically all commercial establishments in Davao, in fruit stands frequented by tourists, in the airport and in Ecoland terminal. Wholesalers also come to distribute the goods in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and even in the Taguig branch of Market! Market! in Metro Manila.

When SM City Davao started displaying the Lola Abon products in its pasalubong area, the SM City grocery store saw how fast the items were selling and followed suit.

Saniel says SM City once asked the family enterprise to distribute their Lola Abon products nationwide but they turned down the proposal because they would have a hard time monitoring them when they reach other parts of the country.

“We wouldn’t know which products are selling and which ones are not,” he says.

“Besides, our product is highly perishable,” he adds. “We only allow it to stay on display for a month, after which, we pull it off the shelf. We could no longer do this if we distribute our products in areas beyond our reach.”

Robinsons Place shopping mall in Bacolod City,...Image via Wikipedia
Robinsons Place Bacolod reflects the unique lifestyle of Bacolod, which is known as the City of Smiles. In Bacolod, people don’t go to the mall just to run errands or hurriedly buy food and other necessities. Most often, a trip to the mall is with the entire family, for dinner and a screening at Robinsons Movieworld, which has a 3D cinema. Children, even teenagers, spend Sundays with their families (going out with friends is done on Saturday) and everyone wants to go to the mall to eat, walk around and enjoy the company of their family.

Robinsons Place Bacolod, located on Lacson St., Mandalagan, has over 134 stores and restaurants, and six cinemas. The mall is near Silay City, which is home to many historical landmarks including the Victor Fernandez Gaston Heritage House, Manuel Severino HofileƱa Heritage House, and the Bernardino Lopez Jalandoni Ancestral House.

It is also minutes away from the new Bacolod Silay Airport, making it a good stop for visitors to buy pasalubong on their way home.

Robinsons Place is Bacolod’s first full-service mall. Since it opened in 1997, it has gone from being a daily shopping experience to being the center of leisure and entertainment in the city.

Robinsons Place Bacolod is undergoing an expansion that, once completed, will add a new one-level shopping and dining destination and provide 6,000 square meters more to the shopping mall’s existing gross floor area of 48,500 square meters.

Stock News 2009: Philippines' RLC Opens Robinsons Cybergate Cebu Complex

Cebu Island as seen across the Cebu StraitImage via WikipediaCEBU CITY, Dec 11, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
Robinsons Land Inc. (RLC, PSE:RLC) has opened its multi-million-peso Robinsons Cybergate Cebu, a mixed-use project that fuses office, wellness and retail into one development.
Robinsons Cybergate Cebu is the newest is the newest high-rise building around the Fuente Osmena rotunda in the heart of Cebu City and is just across the Robinson mall and Cebu Midtown Hotel.
RLC general manager Nilo Mapa Jr. said the project is a testament to the companys intention to expand its presence in Cebu.
Momot Irizari, RLC-Cebu group property manager for the commercial centers division, said 80 percent of leasable space of the seven-story building is already booked.
RLC is still negotiating with various business process outsourcing (BPO) companies for its 6,300-square-meter space allocated for a call center operation.
Hopefully, by the end of the year we will be able to sign a deal with a company for the BPO space, she said.
She said that right now, inquiries come from BPO players that have existing operations in Cebu and those that have yet to locate here.
But RLC is open to have more than one BPO locator to occupy the fifth to seventh floor of the building, depending on the need of the company.
Since the call center is open on a 24-hour shift, some of the retail and food tenants have also agreed to operate 24/7, like the pharmacy, convenience stores and the coffee shop.
The first two floors of the Robinsons Cybergate Cebu features food and retail outlets, including homegrown restaurants Mooon Cafe, Flame It and Golden Cowrie. The second level also features a food court, where food kiosks and carts are located.
The third floor of the building is dedicated to its wellness component and this includes salons and spa operators.
The fourth floor is where the medical clinics are found and Irizari said a number of medical practitioners are going to open clinics there, ranging from internal medicine doctors, obstetricians, dentists and orthopedics.
Although the structure is already 100 percent complete, some finishing touches and final fit-outs have yet to be done. RLC is looking at holding a grand opening or a building inauguration by the third quarter of 2010.
Irizari said RLC is already looking ahead to the start of initial ground work for a similar development at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City.
The development of RLCs 45,000-square-meter property, located near the old White Gold department store, is set to open in 2011.
Though still a mixed-use project, it will have a different concept from the Robinsons Cybergate Cebu.
Irizari said the still unnamed project will have a supermarket, department store, al fresco dining, a serviced-apartment component and a convention center.
