Stock News 2012: Maynilad spends P10.4B to bring down NRW

West Zone water concessionaire Maynilad Water Services has spent P10.4 billion since 2007 to reduce water loss due to leaking pipes and illegal connections, enabling it to recover supply for 374,980 new customers.

In a statement, the firm said that it has reduced water supply loss from 67 percent in 2007 to 43 percent as of June this year.

“We have spent P10.4 billion so far to reduce the so-called non-revenue water (NRW) and allowed us as a result to recover an average of 551 million liters per day (MLD) which we now pipe to 374,980 new consumers. In effect, this program gave us more water to serve more customers,” Maynilad president Ricky Vargas said.

Maynilad now has a total of more than one million consumers, up from only 667,000 in December 2006.

Vargas said Maynilad would continue to work on reducing water loss in its concession area.

“When you see us digging up roads, we are laying new pipes to reach heretofore unserved consumers and/or replacing old pipes. Either way, we are doing this to allow everybody the convenience of potable water supply throughout the day now and decades into the future,” he said.

Vargas said Maynilad is pushing farther into the south, particularly Cavite, while it continues to further connect consumers within its area in Metro Manila.

“We are doing all these at the same time. They require a lot of funds and we have been using our own money, borrowed funds, and collections from connected consumers to continue our expansion and rehabilitation programs. So far, we are ahead of our targets.

“We are actually supplying to more consumers than projected,” he said.

Stock News 2012: Maynilad allots P300 million for repair of leaking pipes

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has allocated P300 million for the repair of pipe leaks this year.

Maynilad said in a statement yesterday that the P300 million would be spent for its active leakage control program which involves the repair of pipe leaks as well as the maintenance of accessories.

Maynilad has also allotted P20 million for the purchase of a new leak detection equipment.

The firm uses state-of-the-art leak detection technologies to control pipe leaks.

“We inherited a lot of old and deteriorated pipes. Instead of implementing total pipe replacements which are very costly and disruptive to the public, we’re actively searching for underground leaks so we can repair them using more cost-efficient means,” Ricky Vargas, president and chief executive officer of Maynilad said.

Maynilad said that for the first quarter, it has already repaired nearly 12,000 leaks, which is approximately 17 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

Most of the leaks were found on primary and secondary lines in Caloocan, Manila and Quezon City.

Maynilad has set its capital expenditures for this year at P8.4 billion to improve and expand its water and wastewater services.

The firm said earlier it was looking to raise P2 billion in the latter part of the year to fund development projects.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base.

Stock News 2010: Chemrez ties up with MWC

Department of Science and Technology (Philippines)Image via Wikipedia
MANILA, Philippines - Chemrez Technologies Inc., the country’s largest biodiesel manufacturer, expands its green advocacy by teaming up with Manila Water Co. and continue a program encouraging environment-friendly inventions with the Department of Science and Technology.

The biotechnology firm will sign a memorandum of agreement with Manila Water in which Chemrez commits, for the next five years, to support the water utility in its goal to plant more trees in the watershed of Ipo Dam in Bulacan.

Manila Water has tapped Bantay Kalikasan to manage their reforestation program, similar to what was forged for the successful tree-planting project at the La Mesa Dam.

A whole-day tree planting activity is scheduled on Sept. 9 at the Ipo Dam watershed where volunteers will plant bamboo which is proven to prevent soil erosion better than other plants because of its roots’ intricate network and ability to hold soil together solidly.

The bamboo trees are expected to prevent siltation of the Ipo Dam, avoiding unnecessary additional cost to clean and purify water supply for human consumption. This unwanted expense, if incurred, ultimately means higher price of water to consumers.

A single bamboo tree absorbs a ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime, therefore, helping clean the atmosphere and mitigate global warming and climate change.
