Aboitiz Power Corp. is planning to build a 300-megawatt power plant in Cebu to help address the need for additional capacity in the Visayas grid starting 2015.

The proposed power project, which may likely be coal-fed, will also expand the company’s power portfolio on the island.

According to APC president Erramon I. Aboitiz, the proposed Cebu power project was still being developed and has yet to secure board approval.

“We don’t have a timetable for that yet,” Aboitiz said.

APC has interests in several power facilities located in Cebu, including a 26-percent stake in Cebu Energy Development Corp., which owns and operates a 246-MW coal-fired plant in Toledo City.

APC also holds 50 percent of the outstanding capital stock of East Asia Utilities Corp., which operates a 50-MW bunker-fired power plant in the Mactan export processing zone on Mactan Island. It likewise owns 60 percent of the total outstanding shares of Cebu Private Power Corp., which operates a 70-MW bunker-fired plant in Cebu City under a build-operate-transfer contract to supply 62 MW to the Aboitiz Group’s Visayan Electric Co. (Veco).

The proposed 300-MW power plant of APC will help the government secure adequate supply for the Visayas grid, which will need an additional 2,000 MW by 2030 to address the growing electricity demand on the island.

Based on the Philippine Energy Plan, Visayas will need at least 100 MW of fresh capacity a year starting 2015.

The DOE has so far listed for Visayas only five committed power projects, or those projects that are firmly expected to push through as these have already complied with the necessary permits and clearances of various agencies and concerned local governments and are in the process of financial closing.

Stock News 2013: P10B project in Lapu-Lapu

Megaworld Corp., one the country’s biggest property developers led by tycoon Andrew Tan, is creating its first ever masterplanned township project in the Queen City of the South that is Cebu, as it targets to provide an unrivalled lifestyle of luxury and convenience in the Visayas.

Located in Lapu-Lapu City, the 16-hectare Mactan Newtown is set to replicate what Megaworld has created in Eastwood City and its other townships within the metropolis, according to Noli Hernandez, president of Megaworld Cebu Properties Inc.

Rising in the middle of Cebu’s hottest tourist destination, this live-work-play township is envisioned to provide a consummate lifestyle in which people need not venture out for work, leisure or recreation.

It has recently officially opened for business with the grand opening of the biggest McDonald’s outlet in Central Visayas. Once completed, the Mactan Newtown will boast a masterful mix of residential enclaves, office towers, commercial establishments and recreational facilities.

THE 16-HECTARE Mactan Newtown is set to replicate Megaworld’s previous township developments in Metro Manila.

“At Mactan Newtown, we will be giving the Cebuanos more time for things that really matter and allow them to live more fulfilling lives. This vision sprang from the simple recognition of the need for more intelligent communities that actually work, and it’s a vision that has been translated so far to Megaworld’s other phenomenally successful townships in Metro Manila,” Hernandez explains.

“Megaworld has been known for its previous masterpieces in Manila such as Eastwood City, The McKinley Hill and Newport City. As in these other developments, local and foreign investors can expect nothing less than a solid and steady appreciation of property values, given the synergies that can only be created when world-class components of living, working and playing are put together,” he further says.

According to Hernandez, future residents of the P10-billion development can “look forward to a unique lifestyle that is both dynamic and laidback, luxurious but accessible, visionary but real and tangible.”

He stresses that buying a unit at The Mactan Newtown is not simply about acquiring a dwelling place, but rather about becoming part of a community.

MANGO Trees line the Mactan Newtown’s wide pedestrian lanes.

“[It is] where even the smallest studio unit provides access to a full suite of recreational facilities, from a fully-equipped gym, a 20-meter lap pool, an aqua gym, a rock-climbing wall, a tennis court, an indoor spa, culinary station and a function room, not to mention an ultra modern hotel-like lobby,” Hernandez notes.

The township’s proximity to various resorts and the availability of water sports activities, Hernandez adds, also highlights the uniqueness of the community. And if these weren’t enough, stepping out of one’s residential tower also means being served a feast of various international dining and shopping options located within the township.

Robinsons Galleria Cebu, the group’s 38th mall, is targeted for completion and opening in 2014. The seven-story commercial building will rise on a 4.6 hectare lot along Gen. Maxilom Ave. and will have a gross floor area of about 156,000 square meters.

On the same site will rise the first Cebu branch of the group’s budget hotel gohotel.ph, which will offer 153 rooms. Three floors are dedicated for BPO space with over 9,000 square meters of leasable space.

The retail component, on the other hand, will have a gross leasable area of 56,000 sqm spread on four levels.

RLC president Frederick D. Go said the company is ramping up investments in Cebu, which is experiencing robust economic growth and a booming tourism sector.

Robinsons Galleria Cebu will be RLC’s third mall in Cebu after Robinsons Fuente and Robinsons Cybergate Cebu, which is a mixed-use mall and office development also in the Fuente Osmeña area.

The company currently operates the newly renovated and improved Summit Circle Hotel in Fuente Osmeña Circle. The group will soon have three hotels in Cebu, including the Summit Shores Resort hotel which will be part of the upscale Amisa residential development on Mactan Island.

RLC is also building the Azalea Residences, a residential development in Gorordo Ave.

Stock News 2011: Robinsons Land to build 200-room Mactan hotel

Robinsons Land Corp. is set to build a 200-room deluxe seafront hotel in Mactan, Cebu, raising its stake in tourism in the country’s biggest commercial hub outside Metro Manila.

During Friday’s listing on the Philippine Stock Exchange of P13.65 billion worth of shares recently sold through a stock rights offering, RLC president Frederick Go told reporters that the new hotel would be called “Summit Shores” and would cater to both leisure and convention tourism.

The new hotel is in the planning stage and construction can start this year. It will occupy two hectares out of RLC’s five-hectare leisure estate development Amisa in Mactan along the same row as the plush Shangri-La and Movenpick Resort & Spa (formerly Hilton).

The upcoming hotel would be finished in two years, Go said. It would offer hotel rooms for $100 to $120 a night and would be more of a sprawling type of hotel-resort with a large convention facility than a high-rise development, Go said.

The Mactan hotel will be the fifth among RLC’s portfolio of deluxe hotels and the second in Cebu after an earlier hotel in Cebu City formerly called Cebu City Midtown Hotel. The group also owns the Galleria and Crown Plaza hotel properties in the Ortigas central business district and Summit Ridge in Tagaytay.
