For the second quarter alone, revenues reached P5.9 billion, or 19 percent higher than a year ago.
Cash flow as measured by earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) stood at P4 billion, up by 17 percent from the same period in 2009, for an EBITDA margin of 67 percent.

Consolidated revenues grew by 17 percent to P11.3 billion from a year ago. Six-month EBITDA grew by the same pace of 17 percent to P7.7 billion, for an EBITDA margin of 68 percent.
“The encouraging results delivered by SM Prime validate our positive sentiment on the economy, which is further bolstered by robust consumer spending. In that light, we look to the second half of the year with more optimism in executing our expansion plans," SM Prime president Hans Sy said.
"We aim to offer more avenues for high quality yet affordable products and services, for which the SM brand is known,” he added.

Stock News 2010: PSE new system will stall the market

Stock Market Fortune CookieImage by bransorem via FlickrThe Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) made a giant leap into the 20th century last week with the unveiling of the New Trading System. It is really only the 20th century since global stock markets, both big and small, have been using a trading system that could process several different kinds of orders for decades.
Unfortunately, the system was and still is to a certain extent, subject to glitches and buggy behavior. But overall, the improvements will have many long-term positives that will soon outweigh any temporary inconveniences.
However, if you are a long-time trader on the PSE, be prepared for some fundamental changes in the way the trading is conducted and what you can expect from trading.
Aside from the changes in the kinds of orders you can now place on the exchange, the most fundamental and significant change from a trader’s and investor’s perspective is the change in the size of the minimum fluctuation.
Every stock exchange determines the minimum price change that can be affected for each individual trade. Thirty-five years ago when I started on the New York Stock Exchange, prices were quoted in “eighths” of a point regardless of the price, large or small, of the stock. One-eighth was equal to 12.5 US cents. Therefore, the minimum price fluctuation was 12.5 cents whether the stock price was $5 or $500. Since then, the exchange has made some minor changes, including reducing the minimum fluctuation or “tick” to 6.25 cents.
The minimum fluctuation of share on the PSE was based on the price of the stock. The lower the price, the lower the amount of the minimum fluctuation. Yet, the minimum was actually quite large in comparison to other exchanges. With some issues on the PSE, the minimum tick was equal to several percent of the underlying stock price. This created a day trader’s dream. A trader could buy the stock and the price would only have to move three fluctuations, which is not very much, and be a the breakeven point if he chose to sell.
The problem with having a large minimum fluctuation price is that it creates high volatility in the price of the stock. It was not uncommon on the PSE to see price fluctuations of 4 percent or 5 percent up and then 4 percent or 5 percent down from the previous closing price. But again, this is somewhat to the benefit of traders who want to trade small price movements. For longer-term investors wanting to get a better price, it was slightly advantageous also as there was always a good chance that even though the price might have run up in the early part of the day, short- term profit-taking might bring the price right back to the opening level.
The old system was also good for stock-price manipulators. For many of the second line and less frequently traded issues, it did not take much money to buy and move prices higher by 10 percent or 15 percent. But with the new system, things have changed.
Under the old system, the minimum fluctuation for Philippine Long Distance Telephone (TEL) was P5. Based on a price of P2,400, that amounted to a 0.21-percent fluctuation. Now the minimum is P2 or a 0.080-percent fluctuation. Now that might not seem like a big deal but it is. Here is why.
Based on the positing of orders on TEL at 10 a.m. yesterday, it would have taken P30 million of buying to advance the stock P6 or 0.25 percent. Previously, that would have been just one fluctuation that might have taken only a few hundred thousand pesos of buying for the same amount of price movement.
For other issues, the change is very significant. Ayala Corp. (AC) used to trade in P2.50 increments. Now it is only P0.20. Yesterday AC needed P9.8 million of purchases to move the stock P2. Before, that might have been the same price movement for less than P100, 000.
Metrobank (MBT) with a price of P60 now trades in P0.05 fluctuations from a previous of P0.50. MBT needed P8.4 million of buying for the price to go up P0.65.
Yesterday TEL traded P177 million and went up P10, or 0.41 percent. MBT traded P126 and advanced P0.15, or 0.25 percent.
Although the PSE had net buying yesterday of over P250 million, the index advanced only 0.83 points.
Because this is a major and fundamental change in the way business is conducted on the exchange, it is going to take some time to adjust to the new system. Further, the PSE is going to have to make equally significant changes to the way the PSE index is calculated. I doubt if they have even thought about this issue. The index must be recalculated with a new formula to reflect the decrease in volatility. Now, a 100-percent point movement in the index would require as much peso volume on the upside as nearly a 1,000-point move required in the past.
Decreasing the amount of volatility in the stock market is not necessarily a bad thing. However, for individual stocks the new system will distort the price based on the amount of money coming into the shares. What we may see over the next months is companies splitting the number of shares to reduce the price. The lower the price of the stock, the higher the amount of price movement for the same amount of peso buying.
The new system was not equal across the price ranges. A stock trading at P1 still has the same fluctuation of P0.01. A P10 issue used to be P0.10 and is now P0.02. If I headed up a company that shares were trading at P10, I would split the stock 10 for 1 and lower the price to P1. That would make a lot of stock market sense.
Many more changes are coming. Guaranteed.

Stock News 2010: San Miguel Stock Surges on Dividend, Fund Raising

A coal mine in Wyoming, United States. The Uni...Image via WikipediaJuly 28 - Shares in San Miguel surged 10 percent on Wednesday after the Philippine conglomerate said it could raise around $1.6 billion by selling shares and would pay a special dividend.
On Tuesday, San Miguel said its board had approved an offer of approximately 1 billion shares, from unissued capital stock and treasury shares, with a floor price of 75 pesos, to fund acquisitions and investments.
The company also announced a dividend of 0.35 pesos and a special dividend of 5 pesos per share, with a record date of Aug. 10.
"I think the main driver is more of the high yield that the dividend would generate based on yesterday's closing price. The yield is above 7 percent, so it was basically the attractive yield," said Jose Vistan of AB Capital Securities.
The company's B shares, which are open to all investors, closed up 9.5 percent at 75 pesos, having matched their 2010 high of 76 pesos during trade. Volume topped 140,000 shares, more than 10 times the average volume over the past 30 days.
Its A shares, restricted to locals, ended up 10 percent at 74.8 pesos, having hit a 3-year high of 76 pesos during trade. More than 390,000 shares were traded, about 7 times their recent daily average.
"It is more on the cash dividend that they will be giving come August. There are some interest on the investor side, given that the yield will be around 7.9 percent," said Ron Rodrigo of DBP-Daiwa Capital Markets Philippines.
SHARE SALE
The 120-year-old conglomerate, which makes 9 out of every 10 beers sold in the Philippines, is aggressively diversifying away from its traditional food and drinks businesses into high growth areas like power, mining, oil refinery, telecommunications and infrastructure.
Apart from the share sale, the company is also in the process of selling a minority stake in its San Miguel Pure Foods Co Inc unit..
RLPC reported on Tuesday bankers had launched an $880 million loan for San Miguel.
The company is in talks to buy stakes in railways, toll roads, airport projects and coal mines.
San Miguel is now one of the country's biggest power players, after it secured state contracts to operate and manage the output of four power plants on the main island of Luzon with a combined capacity of more than 3,000 megawatts.
Its power portfolio accounts for 28 percent of the power grid on Luzon and 21 percent of the national grid.
A spokeswoman for San Miguel said the company had 4.5 billion authorised shares, of which 3.275 billion were on issue.
The spokeswoman said San Miguel held 65.5 million treasury shares. That would mean most of the approximately 1 billion shares to be sold would come from unissued stock, diluting the value of current holdings.
The company has a small free float -- Reuters data shows it at around 11-12 percent -- with most stock held by a group called Top Frontier, related entities and San Miguel management. San Miguel in turn owns a stake in Top Frontier.
"On the dilution, it will happen within the year but no finality yet, so that is why investors are more focused on the cash dividend that company will give come August," said DBP-Daiwa's Rodrigo.
Tuesday's brief statement on the share sale did not mention a timing or any details of the sale process, such as whether it would include a rights issue for existing shareholders.
Earlier this year, San Miguel got shareholder approval to issue new shares "without attendent preemptive rights", and to create a common stock instead of having A and B shares.

Stock News 2010: Ayala to invest P10B in Bonifacio development

Fort Bonifacio in TaguigImage via WikipediaAYALA Land Inc. (ALI) is bullish on its Bonifacio Global City project in Taguig, baring on Tuesday a plan to pour in as much P10 billion worth of projects over the next two to three years in the budding central building district.
In a press briefing, Ayala Land president Antonino T. Aquino said the bulk of the investment will be used to expand the company’s residential, office and retail presence within the Serendra and Bonifacio High Street area.
Aquino said the company is expecting to add between 30,000 square meters (sqm) to 35,000 sqm of retail and office spaces along the kilometer-long Bonifacio High Street which, in turn, will support the Serendra residential community.
“The office component completes the development. It will make the residential [developments] very real,” the company official told reporters yesterday.
Other projects in the pipeline include the new headquarters for sister-company Globe Telecom and the Mind Museum at the end of Bonifacio High Street. The developer also plans to launch within the year its first boutique-style hotel catering to businessmen.
Aquino expects Ayala Land’s products targeting the upper income market—along with the rest of the company’s brands—to continue to do well this year.
High-end brand Ayala Land Premier (ALP) accounts for 40 percent of the company’s residential sales, which last year amounted to P26.84 billion.
“Demand for Ayala Premier products have already tripled so far,” Aquino said.
From an investment perspective, valuations in Serendra have risen at least 50 percent from P90,000 per sqm in 2004, he said. In addition, the rental yield is pegged at between 8 percent to 11 percent per annum.
For this reason, ALP yesterday launched the P4-billion high-rise condominium project called West Tower to rise within the-five hectare One Serendra.
The project, a followup to the East Tower launched in 2008, will offer a total of 372 units with prices starting from P8.5 million. Turnover is scheduled on 2015.
Rex Mendoza, ALI senior vice president of corporate sales and marketing, said the developer has already noticed strong demand for the project. A preselling event will be held this Sunday for West Tower.
